Amazona species

40–60+ years depending on species

Size

Medium to large; roughly 10–18 inches by species

Species & subspecies

True taxonomic companions under this hub — distinct species or subspecies, not captive color morphs.

  • White-fronted Amazon

    species

    Amazona albifrons

Also called spectacled Amazon. One of the smallest Amazons (~10 in). Distinct species with subspecies albifrons, saltuensis, and nana.

  • Blue-fronted Amazon

    species

    Amazona aestiva

Common companion Amazon (turquoise-fronted); lively vocal personality.

  • Yellow-naped Amazon

    species

    Amazona auropalliata

Distinct species known for strong talking potential and bold presence.

  • Double yellow-headed Amazon

    species

    Amazona oratrix

Large yellow-headed Amazon species; long-lived and vocal.

  • Orange-winged Amazon

    species

    Amazona amazonica

Widely kept companion Amazon with orange in the wings.

Colorations

Captive color morphs and mutations for learning — not wild subspecies. (Example: turquoise in green-cheeks is a morph.)

  • Species-typical colors

Most Amazon visual differences are between species, not captive morphs. True color mutations are uncommon compared with budgies or green-cheeks.

Natural history

New World forest parrots with strong flock songs. Many species are accomplished vocal learners.

Personality

Confident, comedic, and sometimes stubborn. They shine with positive training and clear boundaries.

Social & communication

Often one-person favorites but can be social butterflies with the whole household when guided well.

Vocalizations

Loud songs, squawks, and speech. Plan for volume, especially at dawn and dusk.

Diet basics

Measured pellets, abundant vegetables, limited fruit and nuts. Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, onion, garlic, xylitol, and salty foods. Watch treat portions—many Amazons love food.

Housing, sleep & enrichment

Large sturdy cages, big-bird toys, bathing dishes, and reliable sleep cover routines. Music, training, foraging, and chew wood. Channel showmanship into tricks and foraging games.

Behavior notes

Hormonal bluffing is common seasonally—use stationing and rewards, not confrontation.

General everyday care

Long lifespan means decades of enrichment planning and consistent manners practice.
